Witnessing Coexistence on the Jafuta Reserve

At the heart of the Elephant CREW’s efforts to promote human-elephant coexistence is their home base – the Jafuta Reserve. Located along the boundary of the iconic Zambezi National Park, the Jafuta Reserve provides a unique window into the realities of living alongside Africa’s largest land mammals.

Elecrew and elephants united

One of the most remarkable sights on the reserve is the regular visits by wild elephant herds to our largest watering hole, or “pan” as they are known locally. Despite being partially fenced, the Jafuta Reserve maintains natural animal corridors that allow these majestic creatures to freely move in and out of the property, providing them access to this vital water source.

As the dry season progresses and drought conditions worsen, we have observed a steady increase in the number of wild elephant herds coming to drink at our pan. This year has been particularly catastrophic, with high death rates reported across wildlife and livestock populations due to the severe shortage of food and water available. Witnessing the desperation of these thirsty elephants as they converge on the Jafuta Reserve’s watering hole is a stark reminder of the challenges they face in the face of climate change and habitat loss.

How Our community programs help humans and elephants coexist

The communities living on the boundary of the Jafuta Reserve and Zambezi National Park are bearing the brunt of these challenging conditions. With crop yields plummeting, many families are struggling to put food on the table. The Elephant CREW is working hand-in-hand with these local residents, finding collaborative solutions that ensure the wellbeing of both people and elephants during these trying times.

Through our community outreach programs, we have helped establish early warning systems that allow the villagers to monitor elephant movement and avoid potential conflicts such as our beehive and chili fencing. By working closely with the local leaders, we have also been able to identify and address the underlying issues that drive human-elephant conflict, such as the need for improved food security and reliable access to water resources.

Witnessing the wild elephant herds peacefully situated near our own Ambassador Herd is a powerful testament to the possibility of coexistence. We are proud to say that we have had two successful self-releases from our in human care herd. The Jafuta Reserve’s carefully managed ecosystem, with its diverse vegetation and abundant water sources, provides the ideal conditions for wildlife to thrive.

Creating balance

However, we recognize that achieving this balance requires tireless effort and the support of the global community. The Jafuta Reserve is a living laboratory, where we can study the intricate dynamics of human-elephant interactions and develop innovative solutions that can be replicated across Africa.

One of the key initiatives we have undertaken is the establishment of a state-of-the-art research and monitoring program. Through observation and Artificial intelligence, where we are able to closely monitor the movements and behaviours of our in human care elephants along with the wild elephant herds that visit the Jafuta Reserve. This data is invaluable in informing our conservation strategies and helping us anticipate and mitigate potential conflicts in nearby communities before they arise.

Moreover, the Jafuta Reserve serves as a hub for community-based ecotourism, providing the residents with sustainable livelihood opportunities that are directly linked to the protection of the elephants and their habitat. By empowering these communities to become active stewards of the reserve, we are fostering a sense of shared ownership and responsibility that is essential for the long-term sustainability of our coexistence efforts.

Elecrew is continuously developing

As the Elephant CREW continues to refine and expand its work on the Jafuta Reserve, we remain steadfast in our commitment to finding solutions that benefit both people and elephants. Whether it’s through the implementation of innovative early warning systems, the development of drought-resilient agricultural practices, or the creation of alternative income streams, our goal is to create a model of harmonious coexistence that can be replicated across the region.

Join us in our mission to secure a future where elephants and humans can thrive together. Your donations and advocacy can make all the difference in helping the Jafuta Reserve communities’ weather this crisis and safeguard the natural corridors that allow for this remarkable display of coexistence. Together, we can ensure that the Jafuta Reserve remains a beacon of hope, showcasing the transformative power of community-driven conservation efforts.
